Support LibreTranslate as an alternative to DeepL
What feature would you like implemented?
Add an option to use a self-hosted instance of LibreTranslate instead of DeepL or DeepLX. This was previously discussed in #324 (closed), but I believe this is still important enough to add.
Why should we add this feature?
Currently, all of Sharkey's translation options are tied to DeepL, a commercial product. While a free option is available, it's undesirable for several reasons:
- The terms of service prohibit use for text containing personal data.
- Translated texts are stored in a database for training purposes.
- The number of translations is limited.
Support for LibreTranslate would introduce an alternative option for admins who don't mind the lower translation quality. There's already an established history of using LibreTranslate on fedi, as both Mastodon and FireFish support that option.
